So how did the finals between Vietnam’s Gigabyte Marines and Thailand’s Ascension Gaming went? Here’s a play-by-play:
Coming into the Finals to determine who gets the slot directly into the World Championships Group Stages; we saw G4 bust out his 3rd ‘counterpick’ to Syndra in Fizz (previously played Vladimir and Ekko against Young Generation). However, it didn’t work out quite as well as Ascension would have liked as Gigabyte Marines constantly played off their superior lane pressure and took preferable fights.
Despite their strong early game; the Marines and Ascension traded blows in the mid game and Ascension looked to be coming back before their greedy tendencies were punished by Gigabyte Marines to take Game 1.
In a much one sided game than the first; Gigabyte Marines masked the early weaknesses of their Kassadin pick with a high-pressure Bot Lane of Varus and Zyra as well as a strong early game jungler in Rek’Sai.
Playing off this early game power Gigabyte Marines snowballed extremely hard and despite Ascension once again almost pulling back in teamfights they were too far behind to come back.
Returning to the Taliyah pick which they found success with against Young Generation; Ascension once again returned to their power Mid and Top combination and it paid dividends. Snowballing hard in the early, Ascension pulled ahead to a huge lead. However, with Optimus on a late game monster in Vladimir, he managed to keep Gigabyte Marines in the games, finding numerous picks onto Lloyd and being an absolute horror to deal with in teamfights.
Coming into the late game, with Ascension finding themselves unable to shut out the game, Gigabyte Marines managed to sneak a Baron and even escape with 3 which brought them solidly back into the game. From here with the AoE power in their team composition, 1 good fight in Ascensions jungle allowed them to take the game.
And with that, Vietnam’s Gigabyte Marines has qualified for the 2017 World Championships Group Stages. Meanwhile, Ascension Gaming will play Young Generation (who took down Manila Eagles 3-0 earlier in the day) for the last seed for the 2017 World Championships Play-Ins this Sunday.
