The list of the final eight teams set to compete at the 2017 Overwatch World Cup at BlizzCon 2017 is now complete as the United States and the United Kingdom earned their spots in convincing fashion against formidable foes earlier this morning.
Leading teams in both Groups G and H entered the third day with their places in the playoff stages secured having won both of their first two matches; The United States followed their day-1 4-0 win against New Zealand with another 4-0 win over Brazil. Taiwan followed suit, emulating the 4-0 score against New Zealand having defeated the Brazilians 4-0 on day 1. In group H, team Great Britain continued their campaign with another 4-0 win against Israel on day 2. Their closest group rivals, Germany defeated Belgium 4-0 to effectively end the Belgians’ hopes of a playoff berth.
US vs. Taiwan: A Bout To Remember
The third matches are to determine the group G winners and the home team ensured they have a more favourable passage in the playoff match by defeating the Taiwanese 3-1. Well aware of the importance of the win, Jay ‘sinatraa’ Won & co started strong with 2-1 and 2-0 map wins on Hollywood and Nepal to set them on their way before the Taiwanese clawed one back with a hard-fought win on Horizon Lunar Colony.
Both teams managed a full capture on both points but it was the Taiwanese who had a little extra in the tank to win the deciding round for a final score of 3-2 to reduce the United States’ lead to 2-1. However, it was as far as the Taiwanese could muster as the United States pushed the payload all the way on Route 66 to secure a 3-1 aggregate win.
The World Cup ain’t over yet for the Taiwan team though, as the loss sets up a meet with Group H winners, Great Britain who defeated Germany 4-0 in their final group match. A letdown of a match to most, the Germans could not match the Brits when it mattered most, losing 3-2 on Numbani and failing to capture even one map on Lijiang. They only managed to capture the first point on Horizon Lunar Colony and were stopped short of the second checkpoint on Route 66 to lose the set 4-0.
In other matches, the second group G match saw Brazil salvage some pride as they overcame New Zealand 3-1. After impressive outings against the mighty team USA and Taiwan, Brazil defeated New Zealand to leave Santa Monica with their heads held high. The same could be said for Israel as they defeated Belgium also by the same margin to secure third place in Group H.
Germans Denied. Again.
The playoff matches saw hosts United States going against Germany while Great Britain taking on Taiwan. This was when we get to see the gulf between these teams as the States romped to a very impressive win on Hollywood to set the tone. The Germans threw in all they’ve got but were unable to capture even the first point, following a full push by the Americans in the opening round. Consecutive 2-1 wins on Nepal and Horizon Lunar Colony ensured the Americans a ticket to BlizzCon as they sent the underwhelming Germans packing.
Great Britain Sends Taiwan Packing
It was a similar affair but with slimmer margins in the second playoff match as the Taiwanese gave the Brits hell of a fight before surrendering in three sets 0-3 to team Great Britain. A 2-3 opening loss on Hollywood was followed by a 0-2 loss on Nepal which left the Taiwanese’s World Cup dreams in the balance. They somewhat came back to life by successfully capturing both points on Horizon to force a decider round but it was a bridge too far for them as the Brits dug deep to win the map, effectively stamping their ticket to the Anaheim in November.
So there you have it, eight final teams set to battle it out at Blizzcon in November is finally set: the full-Rogue France, first-seed China, Misfits-powered Swedes, Blank esports a.k.a the Australians, reigning champions South Korea, the pro-laden Canadians, the United Kingdom team, and hosts the United States.
