Update: New videos of the entire tournament and a Grand Finals trailer have been added at the bottom of the story, courtesy of Overwatch SEA.
Word just got out that the winner of the first official Overwatch SEA Tournament of 2017 is team CyzoneVN from Vietnam. Singaporean team Unestablished.Juniors came in a close second according to an Instagram post from SG Overwatch player Marcus ‘Revenant’ Tan.
To recap, the tournament was held mainly in April, with the grand finals being held on May 6 offline in Singapore (if this Facebook post on May 5 is of any indication). The top eight teams went through to the ‘Knockout Stage’ in the tournament, which was held in a single-elimination format. From those matches, 4 teams emerged victorious, going into the finals of the tournament.
According to our sources, the video playthroughs and recaps will be out May 11 on the Overwatch SG YouTube channel.
It is interesting to note that there was very little publicity for this tournament: most of the tournament’s details were not shown on a livestream but instead were post-edited and published on the aforementioned Overwatch SG YouTube page. Interested spectators were unable to know when the matches were taking place at all. A live stream for the finals of the tournament was not even announced and we are unsure whether a live stream existed in the first place.
We hope that Blizzard will look into creating more publicity for their various games when they organise tournaments, especially for Overwatch. This will allow the various communities for these games to grow in Southeast Asia as they are able to keep up with competitive teams in the region.
Stay tuned to SPOUT 360 as we update this article with further developments and even video footage of the grand finals (update: check out the videos of the playoffs below).
