Capcom just opened up a poll for people around the world to vote for their favourite Street Fighter character, from the first game to the fifth game that’s currently making esports waves. This seems like a harmless-enough contest to reinvigorate interest among casual and hardcore fans. Or is it? *pulls out tin-foil hat
But first, some info about the voting poll. The contest will last from now until November 5. The results will be announced on January 16, 2018. Here is the list of characters you can vote on the site:
Now onto the crackpot theory part: there’s a good chance that the four most-voted characters may end up in the third season of SFV. Either that or two of the most-voted characters who aren’t Sagat and Sakura (and the new/recurring cast of SFV). Let me explain.
X-Kira leaked some info that the Season 3 characters will contain 2 brand new fighters and 4 legacy fighters. So far, he has been spot-on with the Season 1 and 2 leaks, as well as the Arcade Mode leak.
Here is his recent Tweet regarding SFV’s Season 3 reveal (via EventHubs):
While it states above that 4 Legacy characters will be announced, 2 of those slots are possibly reserved for Sagat and Sakura according to EventHubs user Flowtron (who also leaked Abigail, Menat, and Zeku’s inclusion in Season 2 before their release). The other 2 may be determined by the above character popularity poll.
Again, keep in mind that this is all speculation on our part. This could be just a fun little marketing exercise. But who knows what the future holds for Street Fighter V, at least until the Capcom Pro Tour Finals obligatory reveal announcement?
For the record, I voted for Maki (Final Fight 2, Capcom vs SNK 2).
