With Blizzard launching animated shorts for every monumental announcement period they have regarding Overwatch –there’s eight of them so far in case you’re keeping count- it’s only a matter of time until the company caves and decide to release a full-length animated movie. The shorts themselves are well-made, are on-par with Pixar’s feature length films, and are loved by fans.
It seems that Blizzard and its partner Activision may be on board with the idea. According to Activision’s head of consumer products group Tim Kilpin in a MCV UK interview, they would like an Overwatch full-length animated film very much, most likely after their upcoming Call of Duty film. “These franchises exist across multiple platforms, so it’s not just the game as a driver, but its linear content [movies and TV] as a way to expand the audience.”
According to a Polygon interview, game director Jeff Kaplan said that the team had fun making the animated shorts. “We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay – we can tell any stories we want.”
Based on these quotes & information, it seems like an Overwatch film is not a matter of “if” but rather “when”. Let’s celebrate this possible idea with the most recent Overwatch animated short:
