Once the calm guiding hand of Wisdom, Malthael abandoned Heaven the moment the Worldstone disappeared in Diablo 3. His departure created a colossal fracture within the council of angels, becoming the Angel of Death. Having been defeated by the Nephalem, Malthael joins the eternal battle in the Nexus bringing with him death and destruction.
–He sustains like a boss. Much like Thrall, Malthael has a low cooldown ability (Soul Rip) that grants him percentage health return. Use this to your advantage during 1v1 skirmishes and teamfights to out-live your opponents by spreading your passive Reaper’s Mark and Using Soul Rip to hit as many targets with the mark on them.
–The heroic ability Last Rites can be a great finisher tool and with a coordinated team, can quickly build up to tons of burst damage if the quest is finished.
–Reaper’s Mark shreds Heroes with high health, so don’t be afraid to linger around to do damage to tanks once the other assassin type Heroes are taken care of. You will most likely win the fight against tanks or brawlers just due to this passive.
–He clears lanes really well. Spread your Reaper’s Mark with Death Shroud while in lane phase, and use Soul Rip to clear minions and harass your lane enemy.
–He WILL die to burst damage, especially if he is combo’ed with crowd control effects. Try avoid getting rooted, stunned and/or silenced. Use Wraith Strike to try and juke AOE damage or simply to secure the kill on an enemy, but don’t be too greedy as it is your only means of escape other than simply running(gliding) away.
–Trying to 1-versus-1 high mobility Heroes such as Valla and Tracer will always end with him losing the trade-off and even dying. Stick to heroes that can’t get away easily.
-Positioning during teamfights is crucial to winning, so avoid rushing face-first into a teamfight. You are not going to be initiating the fight, so wait for teammates to peel damage for you as you deal the damage.
Best Maps For The Reaper
Maps involving clearing minions to capture objectives and maps that require great clear to defend against objectives such as the zerg rush in Braxis Holdout can benefit from Malthael’s AOE wave clearing potential. However, he will be picked against teams with high health and low mobility, so keep that in mind when drafting.
Malthael’s best maps: Braxis Holdout, Haunted Mines, and Infernal Shrines.
Malthael’s worst maps: Hanamura, Towers of Doom, and Warhead Junction.
Malthael is currently playable in the Public Test Realm, and will be released to the main servers end of this week. So get ready to reap those souls with this angel of death!
