Overwatch’s pink mech-piloting pro-gamer from South has finally made her appearance in the world of Heroes of the Storm!
Just like her Overwatch counterpart, D.Va serves as a tank warrior, having capabilities to engage or disengage from combat, protecting allies, coupled with AoE damage dealing potential. D.Va starts out with her mech. When she’s out of health, she will switch to the pilot mode (dubbed ‘Baby D.Va’)which can shoot and deals burst damage through her light pistol.
When inside her mech, D.Va is an initiator, engaging enemies with her booster and protecting her team’s DPS hero with Defense Matrix. When she want to clear objective or just zone the enemy team, she can set her mech to self-destruct to make her opponent’s team run away lest they get caught by the blast.
Moving on, let’s raise your APMs and ‘git good’ by learning her abilities below:
When D.Va’s Mech is destroyed, she is ejected after 0.75 seconds and can continue to fight in Pilot Mode. Destroying D.Va’s Mech only awards 50% of a normal Hero’s XP.
Each Basic Attack reduces the cooldown of Call Mech by 0.5 seconds. As a Pilot, D.Va only awards 50% of a normal Hero’s XP upon death.
To master D.Va, you need to learn how to control both of her forms. Once her mech gets destroyed, you will need to run around in pilot mode and you will need to shoot with your pistol as much as possible before you can get back to your mech. Be careful though, she’s very vulnerable in pilot mode, especially when your enemy team has an assassin that has stealth.
Cooldown: 10 seconds
Increases D.Va’s Movement Speed by 125% for 2 seconds. Enemies that are hit take damage and are knocked away. D.Va cannot be Slowed while Boosters are active.
Boosters can be used to either move faster, knock enemies to your allies, or save allies by knocking them away from your allies. You can also use it to run away from difficult battles.
Defense Matrix (W)
Cooldown: 10 seconds
Channel a defensive field in the target direction for 3 seconds, reducing damage dealt by enemy Heroes inside it by 75%. The Mech can move while channeling, but cannot turn. Damage dealt to the Mech by enemies within Defense Matrix still grants the same amount of Self-Destruct Charge.
This is D.Va’s most useful tool. You can reduce damage taken by your entire team by 75%. The problem is you can’t turn once you cast the ability. The best way to use it is with a DPS positioned within the Defense Matrix area-of-effect.
Self-Destruct (E – Mech Mode)
Eject from the Mech, setting it to self-destruct after 4 seconds. Deals medium to massive damage in a large area, depending on distance from the center of the blast. Deals 50% damage against Structures.
Gain 1% Charge for every 2 seconds spent using Basic Attacks, and 30% Charge per 100% of Mech Health lost.
Use this ability more like a zoning tool, because 4 seconds is a very long time in the world of HotS. Most enemies are able to run away easily from the radius. Use it to let enemies flee from objective you want to capture or to zone a big group of enemies. This makes it easier to take them out one by one if they are fleeing in different directions. Alternatively, you can use it to clear a big wave of smaller enemies like those in a Zerg Rush.
Call Mech (E – Pilot Mode)
Call a new Mech and enter Mech Mode. 45 second cooldown. While in Pilot Mode, each Basic Attack lowers this cooldown by 0.5 seconds.
D.Va’s pilot mode has a nice burst of damage and is able to shoot from a distance, so you can utilize her pilot mode well before switching back to mech mode, especially if you’re going for a pilot mode build. Just try to position yourself between your teammates; she’s rather fragile when she’s out of her mech.
Bunny Hop (R – Mech Mode)
Cooldown: 90 seconds
D.Va’s Mech becomes Unstoppable and stomps every 0.5 seconds, dealing damage and Slowing enemies by 40%. Lasts 4 seconds.
This ability is best used with crowd control Ultimates like ETC’s Mosh Pit or Zarya’s Graviton Surge. Bunny Hop deals a heavy amount of damage to enemies around D.Va. Since she’s invincible during these 4 seconds, she can use this move to avoid getting trapped in crowd control abilities.
Big Shot (R – Pilot Mode)
Cooldown: 4 seconds
Deal damage to all enemies in a line. Call Mech’s cooldown is reduced by 8 seconds for each enemy Hero hit.
This is a great ability for D.Va’s pilot build. Not only does it deal a large amount of damage to a line of enemy units, it also reduces her Call Mech cooldown by 8 seconds, allowing her to jump back into her mech quickly.
- Ability to go in and out of fight using her booster
- Able to mitigate incoming damage for herself and her team through Defense Matrix
- Zoning capabilities with Self-Destruct
- Having “extra life”, where she has to be killed twice in Mech Mode and in Pilot Mode
- Pairs well with crowd control heroes like E.T.C, Diablo, or Malfurion
- No AoE ability with fast cooldown, slow waveclear
- Awful movement speed when booster is on cooldown
- Inability to turn when using Defense Matrix
- Very squishy during Pilot Mode, thus easily killed
- High skill ceiling, making her difficult to master
Best Maps To Play D.Va On
D.Va is best played on small and medium-sized maps with narrow pathways like Cursed Hollow, Garden of Terror, and Sky Temple. These maps enable D.Va to flank behind enemy units and push them back to her allies using her Booster. Narrow pathways enable D.Va to effectively shield her team using Defense Matrix as well as making it tough for her enemies to flee from her Self-Destruct ability and her Heroic Abilities.
D.Va will be more difficult to play on larger maps like Braxis Holdout and Warhead Junction; here, she loses out in the mobility department. However, she can mitigate this weakness by taking Talents that increase her Booster and movement speed.
For D.Va’s Build, we’ll be looking at 2 different builds. The first one focuses on her mech while the other maximizes her potential when she’s in Pilot Mode.
This Mech Mode Build focuses on using D.Va’s Booster to initiate the offensive and also using Defense Matrix that gives your DPS heroes a chance to deal damage without receiving much in return. It might be hard to execute in practice because D.Va won’t be able to move at all during her Defense Matrix. Once the enemies start surrounding you, you can immediately use Bunny Hop to deal heavy damage to them. Having the “GG, WP” talent allows D.Va to tank in until your mech gets destroyed, and join in the kill with your team to instantly respawn your mech back into action.
This alternate Pilot Mode build will need careful positioning because you will get killed pretty easily; D.Va in pilot mode is rather squishy. It’s best used when there are no stealth assassins in the enemy team. Having Big Shot as your heroic ability, Pilot D.Va will be able to deal a lot of damage with Big Shot AND also reduces the cooldown of the Call Mech ability significantly. Since D.Va will be in Pilot Mode a lot, she will need to utilize Torpedo Dash to chase low health enemies or to run away as Pilot.
