Along with the latest batch of Star Guardian skins comes a brand new game mode – Invasion!
The gist: you play as one of five Star Guardians and attempt to defend the city against hordes of space monsters. Try your hand at the Onslaught difficulty, where the monsters are tougher and even more spawn than in Normal difficulty. Complete missions to obtain tokens, which can be exchanged for the limited edition New Horizon ward skin.
What’s that? “Onslaught mode is impossible to beat!” you say? Worry not, for SPOUT 360 is here to teach you the easy way to beat this raid-slash-bullet-hell combo.
Step 1: Find A 5-Man Premade Team
Having communication via Skype or Discord makes Invasion much easier, as there can be a dedicated shot-caller to direct the team to focus fire on the space monsters to take them down more efficiently. There are also certain missions that require you to be in a 5-man premade, so it’s a win-win situation.
Step 2: Put Your Most Mechanically-Skilled Player On AD Carry(Marksman)
Like we’ve hinted before, Invasion mode is essentially a bullet hell game. As the AD Carry is going to be the one that dishes out the most damage, he/she has to be able to dodge all the projectiles to stay alive.
The AD Carry also needs to be able to stutter-step properly to kite the legions of Rek’Sais, Cho’Gaths, and Skarners after him. We recommend Jinx or Miss Fortune, or both!
Step 3: Get Your Masteries Right
Every champion that can proc Stoneborn Pact that isn’t an AD Carry takes it. No exceptions, Syndra and Lux. No, stop eyeing that Thunderlord’s Decree.
In Invasion Mode, Lifesteal is nerfed to heal way less than what it would in normal games, so healing from other sources is very important to keep the damage sources alive. The healing from this mastery also procs the buff from Ardent Censer, which is also an important item to pick up.
Champions that can effectively use the Stoneborn Pact mastery are Lux, Lulu, Soraka, Janna, Poppy, and Syndra.
Step 4: Target Priority
Focus on the most-threatening enemies first. Usually, you want to prioritise DPS in the following order:
Kog’Maw ( if in range), Vel’Koz, Kha’Zix, Kog’Maw (out of range), Skarner, Rek’Sai, Cho’Gath, Voidlings
Kog’Maw and Vel’Koz are squishy and deal the most damage, so take them out first and kite out the melee monsters afterwards without worrying about random skill shots flying at you.
Step 5: They Came From Behind!
The big boss of the space monsters functions similarly to the Rift Herald found on Summoner’s Rift – when the eye on her back is open, hitting her from behind causes her to receive a large burst of damage.
To utilise this effectively, have the tankier members of your team draw aggro of The Big One whilst the rest hit her from behind. The backline clears out the hordes of space monsters that The Big One spawns whilst looking out for opportunities to hit her from behind when the eye opens.
That S+ Rank isn’t looking as elusive as it was before now, right? Burn bright, Star Guardians; you now know how to defend Valoran from the space invaders, and might as well pick up that nice new ward skin while you’re at it.
