With the release of the Blue Essence and Rune changes in League of Legends’ preseason, many people are wondering what the most optimal rune setups for their favorite champions are. Well, we can’t cover every single champion, but here are some basic setups that you can try out and adapt from.
Here is a basic assassin/burst jungle rune page. This can be used on champions such as Jarvan IV, Vi, Lee Sin and Nocturne. Sudden Impact can be swapped for Cheap Shot should the champion you are playing not have a dash, leap, blink or teleport. Eyeball Collection will make you stronger as you gank around the map and clear wards with Scryer’s Blooms. The Ultimate Hat is a must for any champion with impactful ultimates, such as Cataclysm, Assault and Battery and Paranoia.
Next up we have a page for the shielding and healing supports such as Janna, Soraka, Sona and Lulu. Aery provides crazy shielding that scales off AP, which late in the game can become massive. Transcendence causes excess Cooldown Reduction to become AP, which is great, since a lot of support items have CDR tacked on and now you can get some extra AP from there. Gathering Storm ensures your AP scales the later into the game you get, allowing your shields and heals to keep up. The Ultimate Hat is especially great as these kinds of supports typically have very strong ultimates, such as Monsoon, Crescendo, Wild Growth or Wish. The free biscuit allows you to stay in lane longer and Cosmic Insight reduces the cooldown of powerful items like Redemption and Locket of the Iron Solari.
Mages were probably the most negatively affected by this patch, as they lost Thunderlord’s Decree. Going down the Domination tree for Electrocute is usually not worth it and so they will have to make the best out of what they get. Arcane Comet still represents a good chunk of damage if the champion has any form of crowd-control so that you can reliably land it. Otherwise, Transcendence, Eyeball Collection and Gathering Storm help to ensure you scale and the Ultimate Hat is just great on almost any champion. Cheap Shot can be replaced with Taste of Blood for more lane sustain and The Ultimate Hat can be replaced with Nullifying Orb for a free Hexdrinker shield if you are in a losing matchup.
Here’s a page for the safest AD Carry playstyle you will ever find. With this, you are looking to stay in lane with your free biscuits until you can hit an item spike. For added safety, you can opt for Fleet Footwork instead of Press The Attack. Perfect for late-game hypercarries such as Kog’Maw, ideally you’d want to start with a Cull with this rune page and have a disengaging support like Janna to help you scale up faster.
Up next is our top lane tanks such as Maokai, Nautilus and Galio. Aftershock provides an insane burst of Armor and Magic Resist, and does respectable damage as well. Conditioning and Overgrowth means you will scale up even though all you do in lane is farm, and Font of Life helps to top off your allies. Once again, The Ultimate Hat is really good and might get nerfed soon, so abuse it while you can. 15% CDR on your ultimate is *cough* pretty good. We pick Transcendence as tanks usually rely on their abilities to be effective, and this provides us with added effectiveness in teamfights.
Bonus round! We have two fun builds we have been experimenting with…
This is the rune page for you if you wanna run around at the speed of sound. Perfect for champions that rely on movement speed to be effective such as Hecarim and Warwick, you shall always get to your target with the insane movement speed boosts from Predator, Relentless Hunter and Celerity. Sudden Impact and Eyeball Collection provide the damage and The Ultimate Hat is just good in general. Once again, Sudden Impact can be replaced with Cheap Shot.
Hokey Pokey Ezreal
Welcome to on-hit Ezreal. With this rune page, one Mystic Shot will apply the on-hit effects from Dark Harvest, Scorch, Trinity Force, Duskblade and Muramana, all on top of its base damage! You also heal off Mystic Shot with Taste of Blood and Ravenous Hunter, and never run out of mana with Manaflow Band. Eyeball collection provides even more damage. The perfect build for any Ezreal that never wants to fight and instead wants to whittle his enemies down from afar. Should any enemy be hit by a random Mystic Shot, they shall immediately feel the pain.
Of course, there are thousands of possible combinations and setups, these are only a few. Do share with us what awesome pages you have come up with and the strategies that you have found with the new rune changes over on our Discord Channel!
