11. Memorize all heroes’ names, items, skin images, skills and passives
Knowing the top five best heroes isn’t enough. You have to memorize all their names, skins, skills, passives, and whatnot.
12. Be adaptable in lane formation.
The general formation is 2-1-2 and it then becomes 3-1-1 in high elo. The formation may break in some situations like ganking or when helping a teammate from being ambushed or ganked. You should be able to keep an eye out for enemies that may occupy a lane, and use the opportunity to split push.
13. Identifying the situation of a lane from the map.
The enemy hero and enemy minions will only show up if they encounter your ally hero/minions or attacks turrets. Ally minions will show up as green dots while enemy minions as red dots. If there are more red dots than green dots, go to that lane to stop a potential turret destruction. If there are more green dots, then the lane is safe for now.
14. Always read the patch notes.
All of them, whether they are for heroes you use or not. It’s good to keep track of them.
15. Know when to recall.
You may safely recall to base after clearing a wave. You may also bait enemies by recalling. Beware, if your team is currently having a teamfight and your role is still important in it, stay and play with caution.
16. Take every macro into consideration.
If someone pressed “Enemies missing in action”, be cautious as they might be hiding in bushes waiting to assassinate you. If someone said “Beware of Ambush” instead, that person did see enemies going together to gank.
17. Use your CC wisely.
You can use your CC to disable a certain hero or his/her skill – for example, Saber’s ultimate can be used against Tigreal’s ultimate. Save Eudora’s stun for a Fanny who is missing in action. Avoid using your own CC while another CC is being used on the target(s).
18. Know your main hero inside-out.
You should know everything about your main hero, from counters to synergies. You should also know your own style of play and identify the differences in the play styles of other players using your main hero.
19. In-game communications is important.
Saying bad things to your allies will just provoke them. They’ll be more likely to perform badly and will lose interest in winning the game. Be positive!
20. Watch and predict moves.
Watch your opponents in order to predict the skills they will use. For example, in Franco’s hook animation, he will move his left arm behind him before hooking. This gives you time to evade it if you can catch his pre-skill animation.
