Mganga, the Voodoo Jester is perhaps one of the scariest heroes to face in the late-game. He has insane scaling on his skills and can nuke your team or slowly bleed them out with damage-over-time. Today, we’ll dive into how to properly utilize Mganga to find the most success in your games.
Left to Right: Voodoo, Toxic, Fortunate Gift, Detonation
Passive: Normal attacks and skills carry a continuous poison effect that deals Magic DMG and adds 1 Voodoo Mark. Can be stacked a maximum of 5 times.
Mganga creates an explosion of poisonous gas in the specified area. This gas then gradually spreads to cause Magic DMG and a slow-down effect for 4 seconds.
Mganga hurls magic items in the specified direction to cause Magic DMG to any enemy he hits. However, if he hits an ally hero, he will affix a healing mark on them that will recover HP.
Mganga detonates all nearby to cause Magic DMG to enemies and heals ally heroes’ HP. Each mark stack has an additional 50% DMG and Healing effect.
Playing Mganga relies heavily on positioning – you want to remain in range to tag enemies with your abilities but want to stay just out of range of the damage threats. In that sense, Mganga plays out a lot like a marksman, where you want to attack, then move in order to reposition yourself in the fight.
Left to Right: Orb of the Magi, Enchanted Kicks, Frosty’s Revenge, Hecate’s Diadem, Apocalypse, Ancestral Glory, Holy of Holies
Explanation: Since Mganga has insane scaling, Orb of the Magi is a perfect first item for him as it becomes stronger as the game goes longer. We then build Frosty’s Revenge as a way to help Mganga kite his enemies as the slowing passive applies on his passive damage over time (DoT) as well. Hecate’s Diadem then provides us with a huge boost in ability power, while Apocalypse gives us even more consistent damage and tower-taking capability. By that point in the game, you would have built a significant amount of cooldown reduction and Fortunate Gift would be on about a 3-second cooldown.
We round out the build with Ancestral Glory if you want to stay alive in fights or Holy of Holies if the enemy can’t even get through your frontline to get to you.
Skill Max Priority
Detonation > Fortunate Gift > Toxic
Detonation is your ultimate, put points into it whenever possible. Fortunate Gift is on the lowest cooldown and helps sustain your team in fights whilst dishing out damage and applying your passive. Toxic is a good area-control skill but it is mostly a fire-and-forget skill, so we should max this last.
Heal or Flicker
Both of these are respectable talent choices. Pick Heal if your team has heroes with strong Crowd-Control to save you when the enemies get on top of you and pick Flicker to escape when you don’t have strong CC on your team.
Mganga can function as a mid-laner due to his strong wave-clear from Toxic and Fortunate Gift spam. If you decide to play him mid, do note that his early damage is not the best, so seek to tag the enemy with some abilities but do not take extended fights early on.
Mganga can also go bottom lane to play a more supportive role. There he can take advantage of other heroes to land his skills when they crowd-control the enemies. For example, if you are laning with a Valhein, look out for when he uses his stun to immediately drop Toxic on the stunned enemy to ensure at least 3 to 4 stacks of your passive go onto the enemy. He can also heal up his ally to prevent them from going back to base too much.
Mganga is a beast in the late game, but he is very punishable early on due to his lack of mobility. Look out for jungle ganks and be sure to remain safe, farm up, and become a terrifying carry later on.
As the game is fairly new, not everyone has access to the most powerful of Arcanas yet. As such, we recommend using anything you have that has the following stats:
- Magic ATK
- Magic Pierce
- Mana Syphon/Magic Life Steal
- Cooldown Reduction
That’s it for this guide to Mganga, we hoped you learnt something from this and we hope to see you in the Arena of Valor. To be updated on whenever we release new AoV content, do join our Discord and like our Facebook!
