Recently, Mobile Legends (MLBB) has had problems with players going AFK (“Away From Keyboard” for the uninitiated). These players leave their team and thus make them fight an uphill battle with just 4 players against a full team.
Players are getting increasingly frustrated at these AFKers and at the game’s publishers & developers for failing to control the situation through implementing harsher punishments. Here’s a list of ridiculous scenarios of players going AFK that really gets on the nerves of everyone else in the team.
Picking Off-Meta Heroes
This happens when someone in the team picks someone like Nana or Bane (disclaimer: we have nothing against them). Not soon after, someone in the team will start flaming the chat with comments like “GG noob” or “Why pick Nana I’m gonna afk”, and then proceed to AFK when the game starts.
The game is lost before it even started due to one single person, just because of a Nana pick. But teams should at least give the Nana player a chance. Who knows? He or she might turn out to be a really good player.
Teammates Not Co-operating/Not Listening To Them
There are two types of situation where this happens:
- The player AFKs during early game,
- The player AFKs during mid/late game. Both will happen when something in the game does not go according to plan.
These two instances happen because of the following:
- AFK player not getting the hero they want
- AFK player not getting the lane/jungle they want
- Blue buff gets cleared/ksed by teammates
- Seeing a particular lane getting owned
- Seeing your Marksman fall behind in farm
- Gank goes wrong
- Doesn’t like the way a teammate is playing their hero
These kinds of situations can be dealt with by having the AFK player re-evaluate their mindset when playing the game. On the bright side, when they AFK during early game because of any one of the above situations, it is less frustrating for other players in the team. They know it’s almost a lost cause and can surrender early.
It really makes people’s blood boil when the game can go either way during mid/late game, and someone in the team decides to AFK consciously because of such petty situations, causing the game to be lost after spending a good 15-mins trying to win the game.
AFK – But Not Really
In this scenario, the player is actually not AFK, but instead does one of the two:
- Flame the chat,
- Say that they’ll AFK but go around feeding and spoiling the game.
So How Does MLBB Deal With AFKers?
Anyone who plays MLBB knows by now that the Credit System is not effective in weeding out AFKs from the game. The reported players gets at most 5 to 10 credit score (which is lenient and insignificant) deducted and there is a timer ban of only 5 minutes, so they can continue to participate in Ranked games after that. Furthermore, they only lose 1 Star. This “punishment” is the reason AFKers are plaguing the game; it’s anything but strict.
Players with AFK teammates do receive 50 Teammate Precaution Bonus Protection points, which is a step in right direction, but it’s still not enough. Moonton should re-evaluate their AFK punishment system if they want to retain players in the game, especially if they want to compete against the likes of Arena of Valor and Vainglory.
