The Ashgabat 2017 fifth Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games will happen on September 17 to 27. Ever since 2007, the tournament has featured esports as a viable category. Recently, the lineup of games have been revealed; fans of League of Legends may not be happy about this.
The AIMAG committee has decided that DOTA 2 will be part of the lineup; it will join StarCraft II in the RTS category. Other games include Hearthstone in the card game category; the committee has yet to determine the game in the sports game category. There are less categories compared to the fourth Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, where it featured fighting, FPS, and racing.
The national and regional rounds for the games will be conducted online, with the finalists coming together for AIMAG 5, which will run from September 17-27, 2017 at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex.
Participants must register for this by June 10. From here on out, the National Olympic Committees of each country will hold qualifiers to pick the best representatives for the sport.
In related news, the Asian Games will feature esports as a category starting in 2022. The Olympics Council of Asia has forged a partnership with Alisports, the sports arm of company Alibaba, to make sure esports get the limelight.
