What’s the best way to liven up a team-based multiplayer shooter where every role from offensive to support is key to victory & map domination? Simple: by introducing an old-school free-for-all mode where half the roles don’t really matter.
That’s what Blizzard is doing with its upcoming new Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch mode, which will be available in the game’s Arcade menu. While the company stated before that deathmatch would never come to the game, the inclusion of the Arcade option “opened up” their “ability as developers to introduce game modes” that they “wouldn’t normally feel comfortable putting in the quick-play or competitive rotation,” according to game director Jeff Kaplan.
If you’ve played Quake, Doom, or any of the Halo Slayer modes, you’re probably familiar with how this new mode will be like. Basically, eight players face off to get the most eliminations/kills/frags. If you happen to be in the top 4 of the match, you’ll get experience points that’ll get you closer to your free loot boxes (the first person gets more than the rest, obviously). Team deathmatch pits two teams of six to be the first to get 30 kills.
In addition, the new mode will also introduce a brand new map called Chateau Guillard. For you Overwatch lore fans, that’s the crib where Widowmaker used to hang out at before her husband kicked the bucket. So it’s the perfect spot for fraggin’; not awkward at all!
The rest of the available maps will be modified to accommodate the new rules and dynamic. Check out the whole update video below. Or you could play it now since it’s on the PC public test realm.
