While Overwatch updates are regularly being pushed out, new maps are rarely announced by Blizzard because it takes a while to playtest them and balance them out. As a result, there are curious players who tend to dig through game files with the desire to find something new.
Earlier today, Overwatch subreddit user and experienced dataminer Richard Gryffon claims to have discovered two potential new maps for Overwatch in the “map_source228” folders. Gryffon is considered a reliable source because he was also the one who previously datamined the 2017 Summer Games Icons earlier this year even before it was announced. After all, one of the maps he datamined has already been confirmed. Before you get your hopes up, it must be clarified beforehand that Richard has not been able to find any images, sounds, or references to these maps so they might just be concept ideas for now.
Here is the information discovered by Gryffon:
Map 1: Horizon Lunar Colony (hlc_cp)
Analysis: This map has been confirmed by Blizzard. The map will be public tomorrow.
Map 2: Maunganui (maunganui_es)
Analysis: Mt. Maunganui is found in the city of Tauranga, New Zealand and the “es” attached behind the name refers to it being an escort (aka payload) map.
Map 3: Utopea (utopia_c)
Analysis: Acccording to Overwatch lore, Symmetra is from Utopia, India.
If you prefer to datamine the information yourself, you can extract the map information (along with other useful information) using an extractor called OverTool. A step-by-step guide can be followed here though please be warned that it requires quite a bit of technical knowledge and some of the links in the guide are outdated.
